Cheryl Sue Nelson-Bowyer

Cheryl Sue Nelson-Bowyer, aged 73, of Muskogee, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 7, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born on September 10, 1951, to John Daniel Fuller and Nancy Ann (Byrd) Fuller Avery in her beloved hometown of Muskogee, Cheryl’s life was one marked by devotion—to her family, her community, and the work she cherished. A proud graduate of Muskogee Central High School’s class of 1969, Cheryl carried her love for learning and achievement throughout her life. She went on to serve as a Compliance Officer at Green Country Behavioral Health Services, where her commitment and care touched countless lives until her well-earned retirement in 2023. Her integrity and compassion in her professional life were matched only by her warmth and generosity outside of it. Cheryl was a storyteller at heart. As a journalist in her own right, she brought words to life and inspired those around her. Her membership in a writing club allowed her to share her voice and creativity, building friendships with fellow writers who will remember her enthusiasm and encouragement. On April 29, 2007, Cheryl married, Charley C. “Butch” Bowyer, in Muskogee. Together they shared 18 beautiful years filled with love, laughter, and the joys of family. Their marriage was a partnership built on mutual respect and unwavering support, creating memories that will be cherished always. Faith was an important part of Cheryl’s life. She was a devoted member of Muskogee First United Methodist Church, where her spirit of kindness shone brightly in the community she served. Above all, Cheryl treasured her family. Nothing brought her greater joy than spending time with her grandchildren, showering them with love and guidance. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all those who were fortunate enough to know her—her steadfast love, gentle wisdom, and the countless moments of joy she shared. Cheryl Sue Nelson-Bowyer’s life was a testament to compassion, dedication, and the enduring power of family. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Fuller and Ann Avery; her husband, John Nelson; step-dad, Bob Avery; brother-in-law Richard Peak; her daughter-in-law, Heather Nelson; and step-son Kenny Bowyer. Cheryl is survived by her husband, Butch Bowyer of the home; sons, Shane Nelson of Oklahoma City, OK and Jody Nelson of Muskogee, OK; sisters, Debbie Peak and Linda Gipson both of Muskogee, OK; special daughters, Melissa Cunningham and Cheryl Cunningham both of Muskogee, OK; grandchildren, Natalie Locke and fiancé Austin Davis of Maine, Jordan Cunningham and wife Theresa, Alison Henson, Hunter Jenkins, Waylon Jenkins all of Muskogee, OK, Matthew Church and wife Alissa Baker of Welling, OK, Darby Church of Muskogee, OK, Madisyn Cunningham of Muskogee, OK Rylinn Bowyer, and Kolby Bowyer both of Chouteau, OK and Brett Bowyer of Pryor, OK; great-grandson, Nolan Cunningham of Muskogee, OK; special sisters, Betty Rogers and Linda “TJ” Smith; nephew, Wade Gipson and wife Michelle Wright of Muskogee, OK; niece, Jennifer Gourd and husband Johnson Gourd of Porter, OK; and many other family members and friends. A celebration of Cheryl’s life will be 2 PM, Monday, July 14, 2025 at Muskogee First United Methodist Church with Chaplain Cindy Culver and Rev. Andre Contino officiating.
