Ellwood "Woody" E. Root Jr.

Ellwood Edward Root Jr. was born to Ellwood Root Sr. and Dorothy Pauline Root (Sanders) in Bunch, Oklahoma April 14, 1948. His momma called him “Woody”, but he called himself “Goody Woody.” He passed away Friday, March 31, 2023 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 74. Woody graduated high school from Wainwright, Oklahoma in 1967. A “Jack of all Trades”, he worked various jobs until he began his 20 plus year career with Hilti retiring from his position in maintenance in 2002. Woody had a number of hobbies that he enjoyed. He loved motorcycles and had quite a collection he rode over the years. He also loved fishing, especially crappie under most any highway bridge or on the lake in a boat. He might also spend a little time water skiing or helping teach one of the kids to get up on the skis while camping at the lake. He would enjoy sharing a good story of family and friends particularly if it wasn’t about him all while cooking up a burger on the grill and just enjoying time together. He loved classics cars especially fast ones and had a particularly fond appreciation for a certain candy apple red 55 Chevy that he paid $50 for in 1976. Woody worked hard most of his life but the work he seemed to enjoy the most was building things out of wood in his shop. He had a natural artistic eye and could draw anything and seemed to have an unusual ability to construct things from wood. He especially liked building various things like patio furniture, tables, chairs and his favorite various sizes, shapes and types of bird houses. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David; a brother, Doug; and sisters, Brenda and Rita. Woody is survived by a son, Mark Root of Tulsa; daughter, Jo Anna Davis (Ron) of Ft. Gibson; sister, Liz Clayton (Deon) of Atoka; grandchildren, Tyler Root (Masey) of Broken Arrow, Brittany Root (Anthony Carney) of Muskogee, Lauren Davis and Kelton Davis of Ft Gibson; great-grandchildren, Paisley Carney and Aidyn Carney, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. A celebration of Woody’s life will be at 1PM, Wednesday, April 5, 2023 at Cornerstone Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Junior Hogue officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Muskogee with Mason Morton, Larry Carlile, Dave Gaulding, Tyler Root, Scott Standfell, Lance Witt and Rusty Root serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Sam Noah, John Burke, Kelton Davis, Tony Root, Nick Root and Michael Ogden.
