Glenda "Gerry" Cowan

Glenda Gearlene Cowan, 80 of Muskogee, went to be with her Lord on Friday, Christmas Day, December 25, 2015 with her family by her side. “Gerry” as her family and friends knew her, was born October 25, 1935 in Lone Grove, Oklahoma, to Raymond Charles and Myrtle Frances (Hammett) Smith. She grew up in Morgan Hill, California, where she attended Morgan Hill Elementary and Live Oak High School, graduating with the class of 1953. After high school, she attended Draughon’s Business College. Gerry’s family recalls that she was a very hard worker, whether it be at home raising her children or in her professional career as a secretary. She always made sure things were done the right way. Her family recalls her as being immaculate, and a perfectionist. Her professional career included working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Eastern U.S. District Court as a secretary for the U.S. Probation Office, and the O.S.U. Extension Center, from which she retired in 1991. On December 18, 1981, Gerry married her best friend and soul mate, Roy Lee Cowan, in Wagoner, Oklahoma. They celebrated almost 27 years of happy marriage together. Their family remembers how much they enjoyed going to the area senior citizen’s dances together and how much Gerry enjoyed listening to Roy play his fiddle. Gerry attended Central Assembly of God Church and later Christian Chapel in Muskogee. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Roy. Gerry is survived by her daughters, Debbie and her husband Bob Callison and Pamela and her husband Dennis Jones all of Muskogee; her step-son, Roger Carter and his wife Brandi of Wagoner, OK; her twin sister, Charlene Goularte of Merced, CA; her grandchildren, Lori and her husband Ajay Spencer of Ft. Gibson, Tracy and her husband Sean Tiger of Muskogee, Robbie Callison and his wife Jenni of Muskogee, and Sarah Callison of Muskogee; her great grandchildren, Bailey and Caleb Tiger, Madelyn and Alaina Spencer, Kai Murphy, and Riley, Kaleb and Thomas Huston; her great great granddaughter Novella Tiger; and several nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends. A celebration of Gerry’s life will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 30, 2015, at Christian Chapel Church, 4043 Chandler Road, Muskogee, OK with Reverend Larry Miller officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Dennis Jones, Bob Callison, Robbie Callison, Ajay Spencer, Roger Carter and Sean Tiger. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Ellis, Caleb Tiger, Gary Bishop, and Fred “Buddy” Strohink. Interment will follow at Fort Gibson National Cemetery.
