Imogene E. Martin

A life well-lived is the phrase that comes to mind when thinking about Imogene Eva Martin. She was born on November 21, 1932, in Indianola, OK to McKinley and Cora Slayton. Imogene attended school in Indianola and was the high school basketball star until graduating in the 1950s. In her early 20’s she met and married her first love Ervin Reed Wood Jr., and they were married for 34 years. Together they raised two children and made the sweetest of memories in their loving home nestled on Tull Ave, in Muskogee, OK. Imogene worked closely with her husband as together they built Muskogee Bridge Company. In the late 1980s, Imogene moved to the quaint little town of Piggott, Ark. when she met and married her soulmate Robert C. Martin on May 11, 1987. Imogene was a dedicated member of the 1st United Methodist Church and was actively involved with the Women of the Methodist Church Organization. Imogene worked at a small boutique where she might have spent more than she earned, making sure her grandkids had the best baby dolls and toy trucks. Imogene loved shopping, especially at her favorite store Talbot’s. Many things brought a smile to her face and joy to her heart including trips to the beach, a good Thunder game, and of course spending time with the ones she loved the most, her family. Imogene was a cherished friend to many. Her friends will tell you, that she was known for her kindness, generosity, and her loving heart. Imogene passed away peacefully in her home on April 4, 2024, at the young age of 91. She will be deeply missed by all who know her, she was truly a special person who truly touched the lives of many. Imogene is survived by her daughter, Teresa Wood; son, Reed Wood and wife Susan, all of Edmond; grandchildren, Jennifer Luttrell of Edmond, Kristin Gaca and husband Alex of Keller, TX, Addison Wood and wife Breanne of Montrose, CO, Nathan Wood and wife Alora of Edmond, Sarah Fite-James and husband Camerin of Tahlequah, OK, and Sean Martin and wife Amy of Piggott, AR; great-grandchildren, Makinley Luttrell, Sebastian Gaca, Landon Gaca, Eveline Wood, Emory Wood, Gage Martin, and Maddy Martin; along with other family members and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, McKinley and Cora Slayton; her first husband, Ervin Wood, Jr; husband, Robert Martin; stepson, Larry Martin; daughter-in-law, Judy Martin; sister, Maybelle Slayton Scott; and her brother, Roy Slayton. The family will receive friends from 1-5PM, Sunday, April 14, 2024 @ Cornerstone Funeral Home Chapel. A graveside service for Imogene will be at 2PM, Monday, April 15, 2024 at Oakhill Cemetery in McAlester, Oklahoma.
