Jayne M. Roberts

Jayne was born to Noble Doris Owen and Ruth Lee Zachary Owen at Checotah, Oklahoma on November 6, 1931. Named Vasilles Jane at birth, she later added Mae and changed the spelling of Jane; henceforth, becoming Jayne Mae. Jayne joined her older brother Dwayne and parents in the farm home located north of Checotah in McIntosh County, Oklahoma. The family later moved several times while the family grew with four additional sons: Gus, Cleatus, Gene and Larry. Jayne attended several schools, including school in Savanna, Oklahoma and later graduated from Central High School in Muskogee in 1949. While in High School, she worked at Kress and after graduating high school she worked for Bell Telephone. Jayne met Edsel Roberts in 1949 and they were married September 3, 1949 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. In 1950, they built a home in the Elm Grove Community, south of Muskogee where Edsel had resided all his life. Edsel continued trucking, sometimes travelling over 1000 miles from their home, leaving Jayne to care for the home and expanding family. They had four children: Marshea, David, Tommy and Cherie. Jayne was a member of Elm Grove Assembly of God Church where she served as Secretary and Treasurer for many years. Always a witness by example to her spiritual roots. She also served the people of the community by caring for the Elm Grove Cemetery, which included working with funeral homes for many years by assisting with access to burials at the cemetery in addition to clean up and mowing the cemetery grounds. Jayne was an independent spirit and worked as a cattleman for over 30 years tending to her herd, maintaining fences and brush hogging the pasture. She was as comfortable on her tractor in the pasture with her cattle as she was caring for her flowers and trees and her yard on her lawn mower. She was equally happy in their home cooking and caring for their children and later babysitting for her grandchildren. She had a large collection of children’s books she was very fond of reading to the grandchildren. As the grandchildren entered school years, they got off the school bus at her house or she picked them up at school. She took care of them until their parents got off work and ferried them to school activities, as well as attending music, voice, dance, swim, band, sports, and academic activities with them and their parents. She attended college sporting events to see her grandchildren in marching band activities and attended the college graduation ceremonies of all her grandchildren. While raising their children, Jayne and Edsel’s home was also home to cousins, relatives and friends coming for visits or sometimes longer stays. She was a lovable and kind soul. She loved her whole family and others immensely and was always interested in hearing their stories. Throughout her life her mood was immediately brightened when a friendly face, be it friend or relative, entered her home. Her light was always shining for others to share the joy of family and living. Jayne died May 14, 2023 in Muskogee at The Springs. She is survived by her children: Marshea Roberts Halterman of Muskogee, Oklahoma; David Roberts and Trisa Roberts (wife) of Porum, Oklahoma; Tommy Roberts of Muskogee, Oklahoma; and Cherie Roberts Eubanks and Hugh Eubanks (husband) of Muskogee, Oklahoma. She is also survived by her Grandchildren: Jason Roberts and Rachal Roberts (wife) of Coweta, Oklahoma; Mosby Halterman of Muskogee, Oklahoma; Karly Roberts Feather and Scott Feather (husband) of Flagstaff, Arizona; Cody Halterman and Jill Halterman (wife) of Palmer, Alaska; Nathan Roberts and Amanda Guthrie (wife) of Muskogee, Oklahoma; Jeremy Roberts and Brittini Roberts (wife) of Los Angeles, California; Sarah Roberts Cox and Alan Cox (husband) of Porter, Oklahoma; Leah Eubanks Brownell and Cade Brownell (husband) of Bixby, Oklahoma and Hannah Roberts Risenhoover and Taylor Risenhoover (husband) of Edmond, Oklahoma. She is also survived by two brothers Cleatus Owen of Las Vegas, Nevada and Larry Owen and Chris Owen (wife) of McAlester, Oklahoma. Her surviving Great Grandchildren are; Rianna Roberts and Veronica Roberts of Coweta, Oklahoma; Hayden Cox and Hudson Cox of Porter, Oklahoma; Olive Feather and Miles Feather of Flagstaff, Arizona and Madilyn Halterman of Palmer, Alaska. Her surviving sisters-in-law are: Renata Owen of Tucson, Arizona and Kathryn Thompson Owen of Dallas, Texas and her numerous nieces and nephews: Tom Vaden and Sheila Vaden of Alaska, Sue Vaden Mock and Verdina Owen Chaudhry of Arizona, Larry Roberts and Sharon Roberts Zindle of Arkansas, Melissa Owen Black and Karna Owen Rodgers and Carol Roberts Helfrick and Karen Fan of California, Cindy Vaden Kriesel of Kansas, Tracey Owen Crow and Curt Owen of Nevada, Barbara Roberts Turley of Oklahoma, Shannon Owen Riddle and Christy Owen of Texas, Kiersten Owen White and Daniel Owen of Washington. Jayne’s husband, Edsel Roberts, died February 20, 2013. Jayne is predeceased by her parents, Noble Owen and Ruth Owen, and her brothers, Gus Owen, Dwayne Owen and Gene Owen. Jayne’s life will be celebrated at 10AM, Saturday, May 20, 2023 at Elm Grove Assembly of God Church with Mr. Rick Clark and Mr. Bobby Burgess officiating. Interment will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Jason Roberts, Mosby Halterman, Cody Halterman, Nathan Roberts, Alan Cox, Cade Brownell and Taylor Risenhoover.
