Joe P. Stephens

Joe Pershing Stephens, of Checotah, Oklahoma, passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2026. He was born March 5, 1941, in Porum, Oklahoma, to Pershing and Nadene Maudie (Cole) Stephens. Joe grew up in Porum, attending public schools and later graduating from Webbers Falls High School. On September 9, 1964, he married the love of his life, Peggy Sue Kaler, in Henryetta, Oklahoma. Together they shared more than 61 years of devotion, partnership, and family—building a life rooted in hard work, faith, and deep affection for one another. A proud veteran, Joe served in the United States Air Force from April 10, 1963, to April 7, 1967, earning an honorable discharge. His service reflected the same quiet strength and steadfast character he carried throughout his life. Joe was a farmer through and through—dedicated to the land, the seasons, and the work that shaped his days. He spent his life outdoors, where he felt most at home. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and the simple peace of being surrounded by nature. He was also a member of the American Legion, honoring his military service and the bonds formed through it. Those who knew Joe will remember his steady presence, his love for the outdoors, and his unwavering commitment to his family. His legacy lives on in the land he worked and the many lives he touched with his kindness and humility. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pershing and Nadene Stephens; siblings, Frankie Dean, Susie Defoe, Kathy Ward, June Stephens, Arlon Stephens, and Larry Stephens. Joe is survived by his loving wife, Peggy; sons, Tim Stephens and wife Teka, Mark Stephens and wife Shawn; brothers, Cole Stephens and wife Pearl, and Don Stephens; sisters, Evelyn Wooten and husband Carroll, and Judy Masslock; grandchildren, Lauren Stephens, Leslie Kolmer and husband Tony, Rileigh Stephens, Wyatt Stephens and wife Kenedee, and Laci Stephens; great-grandchildren, Gemma Kolmer, Henry Kolmer, Beckham Kolmer, and Rowan Stephens; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members. A graveside service for Joe will be at 10AM, Monday, August 3, 2026 at Fort Gibson National Cemetery with military honors being presented.
