Joseph Scott Phillips

Joseph “Joe” Scott Phillips, 58, of Muskogee, Oklahoma passed away Sunday, January 1, 2012. He was born to Scott Phillips and Meda Potter on June 18, 1953 in Miami, Oklahoma. Joe attended and graduated from Jay High School with the class of 1971. He furthered his education by attending the University of Oklahoma and graduating in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree. Joe worked for the Veterans Administration as a registered pharmacist from which he retired in 2003. Joe was a member of the York Street Christian Church, the Stamp Club, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was an avid collector and enjoyed his “great finds” as long as he could find a place for them. He also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. He met and later married the love of his life, Julia Howard, on July 6, 1987 in Nevada. Joe was preceded in death by his father, Scott Phillips; step-mother, Emma Phillips; grandparents, Sterling and Orlena Potter, T. and Lula Phillips; uncle, Ethan Potter, aunt, Marcella Franklin; mother-in-law, Inez Howard; sister and brother-in-law, Jerian and Rick Andren; sister-in-law, Deborah Howard; brother-in-law, Darren Howard; and cousin, Marcia Franklin. He is survived by his wife, Julia Phillips of the home; mother, Meda Lively of Jay, OK; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Martha and Chester Martin of Muskogee, OK; father-in-law, Jerry Howard of Broken Arrow, OK; siblings, Jana and Darrell Yandell of Ft. Gibson, OK, Angel and Richard Owens of Porum, OK, David and Lori Howard of Tahlequah, OK, Beverly Howard of Broken Arrow, OK, Terry and Chris Martin-Miller of Dallas, TX; aunts and uncles, Melba Smith of Jay, OK, Betty and Bob Santee of Colorado, Mary and Roy Cartwright of Afton, OK; step-sister, Rhonda Cunningham and husband, Dearl of Jay, OK; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at York Street Christian Church with Pastor Gene Thompson officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe’s nephews, nieces, and great nieces that he loved like they were his own children.
