Reginald Perry Guthrie

Reginald Perry Guthrie, 86 of Broken Arrow, went to be with his Heavenly father Thursday evening, June 21, 2018 after a long illness. He was born December 22, 1931 in Oktaha, OK to James Luther and Florence L. (Perry) Guthrie. He grew up and attended public schools and graduated from Wainwright High School with the class of 1949. Shortly after high school, Perry enlisted with the United States Army. He faithfully served his country and received an Honorable Discharge in February of 1953. On December 6, 1960, Perry married his best friend, Janice Elizabeth Cooke, in Coffeyville, KS at the First Christian Church. They made their home in Tulsa and raised their family there. Together they have shared more than 57 years of happy life and marriage together. Janice and Perry devoted their lives to their family and especially enjoyed time with their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Perry’s family recalls how skilled he was as an upholsterer. He took things that looked worn and tattered and gave them new life with attention to the frames and covers. He owned his own shop for many years, Guthrie’s Upholstery. He also enjoyed being a barber. He had a servant’s heart and helped many through his skilled trades. He was very faithful to his Lord and attended different Bible Colleges, including Rhema and Victory Christian. Receiving certificates of completion from the schools. His faith could never be shaken and he shared that great faith with everyone. Perry was preceded in death by his parents, James and Florence Guthrie; his sister, Betty Jo Dunlap; brothers, James, Donald, Bob and Jack. His survivors include his wife, Janice of Broken Arrow; his daughters, Cheri Poplin and Gwendolyn Guthrie; his sons, Perry Guthrie of Jennings and Bobby Vanderford and wife Aimee of Broken Arrow; grandchildren, Emily Metcalf and husband Chris, Jillian Poplin, Dillon Woodstock, James Perry Chase Woodstock, Anna Woodstock, Lacie Jones, Hunter Vanderford, and Chelsea Dunn; great grandchildren, Lexie Metcalf, Gage Jones and Olen Dunn; sons-in-law, Jim Woodstock and Lance Poplin; Sisters, Eloise Flippin and Anieta Denison and Husband Reasor; Brothers, Harold Guthrie, Bill Guthrie and Helen and Winford Guthrie and wife Connie; numerous other members of the Guthrie family and many friends who will miss him dearly. A celebration of Perry’s life will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at Christian Chapel, 4043 Chandler Road, Muskogee, with his Cousins, Pastor Cecil Guthrie and Reverend Clarence Guthrie officiating. Military Honors will be presented by the United States Army. Memorial services are under the direction of Cornerstone Funeral Home and Crematory; 1830 N. York Street, Muskogee, OK.
