Wanda Lee Downs

Wanda “Penny” Downs, of Muskogee, Oklahoma went to her heavenly home on Friday, January 2, 2015 at the age of 86. She was born March 7, 1928 in Boswell, Oklahoma to Charles Floyd and Jewell Casey Floyd. Penny attended public schools from which she graduated. She worked as a secretary for the Veterans Administration from which she retired in 1989 after 25 years of service. Penny married James Clement Downs on April 20, 1946 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. They shared more than 42 years of marriage together. Penny was an active and faithful member of Southeast Baptist Church where she served for more than 40 years. She was an avid reader, especially her Bible. She enjoyed her daily devotions and quiet time with the Lord. She will always be remembered for her love of traveling, decorating her immaculate home, working in her beautiful well groomed yard with blooming flowers, feeding, watching, and identifying the birds, and playing cards and Mahjong with her friends. Penny loved and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her family; from Saturday morning breakfast with her son, Ronald; shopping with her daughter, Debbie; drives with her son, Mike; visits and phone calls with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Penny was loved by many and will be truly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim; and brother, Bill Floyd. Penny is survived by her sons, Mike Downs and wife Gwen of Little Elm, TX, Ronald Downs and wife Carolyn; daughter, Debbie Downs Voegeli and husband Mike, all of Muskogee; grandchildren, Robert Downs, Mark Downs, both of Muskogee, Kacy Remy and husband Tom of Tulsa, Jennifer Schuler and husband Jeremy of Muskogee, Ryan Voegeli and wife Jessica of Durango, CO, and James Lee Voegeli of Tulsa; great grandchildren, Anabelle Remy, Ben Remy, Brooke Remy, all of Tulsa, Haley Schuler and Riley Schuler of Muskogee; many close first cousins, other family members and friends. Funeral services honoring Penny’s life will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at Cornerstone Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Doug Miller officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Gibson National Cemetery with Robert Downs, Mark Downs, Ryan Voegeli, Jamie Voegeli, Tom Remy, and Jeremy Schuler serving as pallbearers.
