Dixie Jo Smith

Dixie Jo Smith, age 89, of Muskogee, Oklahoma, passed away on Friday, January 31, 2025. She was born on September 11, 1935, in Oklahoma City, OK, to Lockett Ward and Irene Melba (Hohenhaus) Back. Dixie attended public schools and graduated in 1953 from Carter High School. Shortly before her graduation, she married Donnie Rex Smith on April 3, 1953, near Carter, Oklahoma. Their union was a testament to enduring love and commitment. Throughout her life, Dixie found joy in the simple pleasures of working in her yard and taking long walks. She was a devoted member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Muskogee, where she attended faithfully for many years, contributing to the community and finding solace in her faith. Dixie Jo Smith will be remembered as a loving wife, dedicated church member, and someone who took great pride in her home and garden. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, devotion, and a life well-lived. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Melba, Barbara and husband Bill, and Larry; brother-in-law, Ronald Smith; her daughter-in-law, Carol Back; son-in-law, Sid Ellis; her great-granddaughter, Hailey Back; and her great-great granddaughter, Sophia Bass. Dixie is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 71 years, Donnie Smith; daughter, Diane Ellis; son, Dennis Smith; brother/son, David Back, and Jimmy Back and wife Teresa; sister, Doris Smith; sister-in-law, Paddy Sanders; granddaughters, Traci Bass and husband Jason, Staci Hoffman and husband Kelly, Kaci Ellis, and Amber Howell and husband Rusty; grandsons, Ricky Back and wife Rhonda, Donnie Back and wife Kristen; great-grandchildren, Shawn and Nikki Bass, Kaden and Cassy Bass, Kelci and Kyle Hoffman, Makenna Hoffman, Emma Hoffman, Jarrett Hoffman, Kanon Shaw, Kambri Shaw, Kalli Shaw, Colton Back, Brian Watson, Payton Watson, Baylee Watson, Ashlyn Howell, Austin Howell, Rylan Howell, Noah Back, Dawson Back, and Joshua Back; along with many other family members. Her presence will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Dixie’s life will be celebrated at 1PM, Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at St. Paul United Methodist Church Rowsey Chapel with Rev. Dylan Ward officiating.
