John Leonard Ogden

John L. Ogden was born July 12, 1944 in Boynton, Oklahoma and peacefully passed away at home in Oktaha, Oklahoma on July 24, 2024. John was the second child and oldest son of B.L. and Ruth (Pippin) Ogden. He was a proud graduate of Wainwright School and Connors State College. He married the love of his life Joann (Parker) Ogden on December 7, 1962. They enjoyed 61 years of marriage and were madly in love through the very end of his life. Together they welcomed two children, Doug and Marla. John was a devoted husband and father. He was ornery, humorous, and never missed the opportunity to give someone a hard time or dub them with a nickname. A man who stuck to his family heritage, he was proud to ranch and raise a red Angus herd with his son, Doug. Through the years he enjoyed raising Haflinger horses and sharing the art of wagon-driving with his grandchildren. John’s favorite role was arguably that of grandfather and great grandfather. Nothing lit up his face with immeasurable joy like the children in his life. He took his job of spoiling the kids quite seriously, happily irritating their parents by buying saddles, toys, and horses. About the only thing he didn’t get to buy was a helicopter- and that’s only because Grandma Joann said no. His grandchildren and great grandchildren thought John hung the moon and are immensely sad at the loss of such a wonderful grandpa. John was a sharp business man and a strong advocate for his community. He owned and operated Muskogee Overhead Door Company until 1992. He became branch manager of Rocket Freight Lines after having worked there as a driver for three years. He was a store manager for McAdams Pipe and Supply in Muskogee and worked as a construction engineer for ODOT. Perhaps the business he was most proud of was Ogden Insurance Agency in Muskogee, which he was owner and agent for from January 1976 to 2024. John served in a multitude of leadership roles to represent his community, such as: American Farmers and Ranchers/Oklahoma Farmers Union vice president and director on the Executive Board from 1978-88 and 2001-2011, executive director of the Muskogee County Community Action Foundation, member of the Governor’s Task Force for Small Business, a board member of Women in Safe Homes (W.I.S.H), past president of Teamsters Union Local 516, and a deacon of the Assembly of God church. John was a man with vision who was willing to take action to make a positive difference. He was proceeded in death by his parents, his in-laws Russell and Hazel Parker; his sister Sandra Kaye Smalley; daughter-in-law Stephanie (Breashears) Ogden; brother-in-law Rev. Leo Guthrie; sister-in-law Carolyn (Bowden) Ogden; nephew Bart Guthrie; niece Amy Ogden; John is survived by his wife, Joann of Oktaha; son Doug and Brenda Ogden of Oktaha; daughter Marla and Rocky Mosley of Oktaha; his grandsons Jace and Grace Ogden of Sulphur Springs, Texas, Rocky Joe Mosley of Indiana, Daniel and Jennifer Mosley of Broken Arrow; granddaughters Rachel and Trea Milne of Oktaha, and Caroline Lacie and Mike Herring of Port Lavaca, Texas; Great grandchildren Jack and Amelia Ogden; Cinch Morris; Aiden, Logan, Adriel, McKynlee, and Brody Mosley; Addilyn and Jaxon Milne; brother Jim and Debbie of Oktaha; sister Edith Guthrie of Stigler; and countless beloved friends, family, and friends that were like family. Services will be 10AM, Friday, August 2, 2024 at First Assembly of God in Muskogee, Oklahoma and internment at Middleton Chapel Cemetery in Oktaha, Oklahoma. Pallbearers are Jace Ogden, Ross Ogden, Trea Milne, Dustin Ogden, Robert Ogden and Weston Hill. Honorary pallbearers are Doug Ogden, Rocky Mosley, Ken Ogdon, Roy and Bill Duvall, Grady Reeves, Steve, Mike, and Gerald Ogden, and Mike Herring. Preparation of John’s final resting place will be provided by Matt Muskrat.
