Mitchell LeRoi Nelson

Mitchell LeRoi Nelson was born at St. Jude's Catholic Hospital in Fullerton, California on November 21, 1973. He passed away February 25, 2024. In August, 1977 he moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma. He is the son of Dr. Mike Nelson and Alexis Nelson. Mitchell attended Grant Foreman Grade School, Alice Robertson Junior High, and graduated from Muskogee High School in 1992. He attended Northeastern State University, where he majored in chemistry. He grew up in Bethany Presbyterian Church, and he was an active member of the Boy Scout Troop there. At Muskogee High School, Mitchell was captain of the swim team. In the summer, he worked for the Muskogee Park Department as a lifeguard. Mitchell worked for Sel-Right Optical in the finishing laboratory. He then worked for Muskogee Regional Optical making the eyeglass lenses. Mitchell moved to Tulsa and worked for Cohlmia’s Nursery, and he enjoyed learning about horticulture. He also worked for Brockards and attended heating and air conditioning school. He married Dawn Cox Moore in Beaumont, Texas on 7 July 2007. While living in Texas, he worked on an offshore drilling rig using his air conditioning training. He and Dawn returned to Tulsa, and Mitchell worked for a company that manufactured concrete beams. In 2012, Mitchell returned to Muskogee, and he worked at BPI’s Sintertec as a laboratory technician. Mitchell always loved having pets, and he was especially fond of cats. He and his sister were part of Oklahoma Alliance for Animals transports for homeless dogs and cats. Volunteers load a large van of pets and drive all night to the Humane Society of Minneapolis to awaiting foster homes. Mitchell was an accomplished fly fisherman, as he started tying flies and fly fishing at a young age. This fishing hobby, he continued for many years. He was also an avid exercise enthusiast and spent a great deal of time in the gym. He remained an accomplished swimmer, snow skier and gardener. He enjoyed spending time with his many friends and his rescued cats. Mitchell was preceded in death by his uncle, Roi Nelson, and his grandparents. He is survived by his daughter, Ferron Vivian Kelso; his parents, Dr. Mike and Alexis Nelson; his sister, Michelle and Doug Huffman; his nieces, Clarice and Gwen Huffman; and his girlfriend Jessica Moreland; along with more beloved family and friends. Services will be at 1:00 PM, Saturday, March 9, 2024 at the Presbyterian Church of Muskogee, 2000 Haskell Blvd with Rev. Jeff Cranton officiating.
