Nora V. Hunter

Nora Vernia Hunter, 95, of Muskogee, Oklahoma passed away Saturday, June 21, 2014 at her home with her family at her side. She was born March 4, 1919 in Tamaha, Oklahoma to Henry Garfield Rogers and Mattie Pernina (Wilson) Rogers. Nora attended Pitcher Public Schools to the 4th grade and then to Fort Gibson Public Schools to the 8th grade. She obtained her GED in 1993 at the age of 74, something she was extremely proud of. Nora met and later married Arthur Clinton Hunter on September 11, 1937 in Arkansas. She worked at Swift & Co from which she retired in 1973 and later for Motters Bookbinding. Nora’s hobbies included crocheting and watching baseball. Her love was bowling. She bowled twice a week for 41 years (till she was 94) until her health wouldn’t allow her to continue. She was a member of the “Grandparent’s Program” at Grant Foreman School until she was 82 and was named “Grandparent of the Year” in 1993. Nora was known to be a great cook as she loved making desserts. She was a charter member of Riverside Christian Church where she was an active member until it combined with York Street Christian Church where she continued to faithfully serve in many ways. Nora was loved by many and will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur; son, Clinton; grandson, Jerry; great grandson, Chris; great granddaughter, Cindy; great great granddaughter, Chelsea; her sisters, Shirley, Nellie, Marie, Gertie, Florie, and Adene; and her brothers, Roy and Buster. Nora is survived by her children, Virginia Weaver, Deloris Hughes, both of Tulsa, Arthur Hunter of Muskogee, Anita Cowden, Deborah Wofford, both of Okay, Kathy Banks of Owasso, and Denice Huggins of Oktaha; grandchildren, Darren Hunter, Dana Hickman, Jeff Hunter, Larry Weaver, Terri Andrews, Raymond Hughes Jr, Carrie Harris, Ronnie Aston, Deanna Jenkins, Dwayne Jenkins, Dwight Jenkins, Mary Raetz, Rhonda Mullins, Paul Wofford, Martha Innis, Charles Banks, Alan Banks, James Banks, Billy Banks, John Huggins, Stephen Huggins, and Brittany Huggins; 36 great grandchildren; 18 great great grandchildren; many other family members and special friends. The family will receive friends from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at Cornerstone Funeral Home. Funeral services honoring Nora’s life will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 26, 2014 at York Street Christian Church with Mr. Gene Thompson and Chaplain Bob Brewer officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhill Cemetery with grandsons, Darren Hunter, Dwight Jenkins, Larry Weaver, Dwayne Jenkins, Raymond Hughes Jr, Charley Banks, and Bubba Huggins serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Huggins Jr, Alan Banks, Jimmy Banks, Paul Wofford, Billy Banks, and Jeff Hunter.
