Peggy J. Starkey

Peggy June Starkey, 86, of Muskogee, Oklahoma passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2023. She was born October 3, 1936 in Jamesport, Missouri to Leland Dale and Helen Louise (Bohannan) Dixon. Peggy attended public schools and graduated from Muskogee Central High School in 1953. She furthered her education at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah obtaining her master’s degree in education. She worked as a supervisor for the Social Security Administration and retired in 2002 after many years of service. Her previous occupations were co-owner/operator of Fashion Cleaners in Muskogee and Modern Cleaners in Tahlequah, and worked for the General Adjustment Bureau, and later was a schoolteacher at Grant Foreman. Peggy was a member of Delta Lambda Chapter of ESA, Order of the Eastern Star and the inspector for the election board. In 1967, she obtained her private pilot’s license. Being a musical person, she played the steel guitar. She also enjoyed traveling, going to rodeos, walking her dog “Sissy”; going to museums and the arts, along with being an avid reader. Every year she would snowbird with her brother, Bill to Gulf Shores, Alabama to attend Mardi Gras. Most important was spending time with her family; especially her grandkids and great-grandkids. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Everett and Monta (Whorton) Dixon, Mack and Cora (Thompson) Bohannan; parents, Leland Dale and Helen Louise (Bohannan) Dixon; brother, William Dale “Bill” Dixon and wife Joyce “Naber”; and great-granddaughter, Briar Rose Marie Trammell. Peggy is survived by daughter, Cindy June Skaggs of Muskogee; son, William Lee “Billy” Starkey of Tahlequah; grandchildren, Michael Gregary Willis Skaggs of Wagoner, Amanda Marie Skaggs of Fort Gibson (Terri), Jennifer June “Tootie” Willis of Fort Gibson (Jimmie), Allison Lynn Starkey of Tahlequah, Hunter Duane McDaniel of Muskogee; great-grandchildren, Brenner Cale Skaggs, Adrin June Trammell, Isabelle Grace “Izzy” Shipley, Karson Mavrik Shipley, Paizlee Elizabeth Trammell, Harper Leigh Elle Shipley and Steel Michael Skaggs; along with other family members and friends. Peggy’s life will be celebrated at 10AM, Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Cornerstone Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Donnie Echols officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery with Brenner Skaggs, John Dixon, Charlie Dixon, Jimmy Dixon, Eric McKenzie and Emily McKenzie serving as pallbearers.
